CSAT: the paper aspirants underestimate

Uday Academy faculty · 20 January 2026 · 5 min read

CSAT — the second Prelims paper — is qualifying. You need 33%, and the marks do not count towards your rank. Because of that, a lot of aspirants treat it as an afterthought. Every year some of them clear the GS paper comfortably and go home anyway, because they could not cross 33% in CSAT.

Qualifying is not the same as easy

The paper tests comprehension, basic reasoning and class-ten level numeracy. For someone from a mathematics background it can feel trivial. For someone who has not touched numbers since school, a long passage of data interpretation under time pressure is anything but. Knowing the cut-off is low does not help if you freeze on the day.

A little, regularly, is enough

You do not need months of preparation. You need to not be surprised. Thirty minutes, two or three times a week — a few comprehension passages, some reasoning sets, a little arithmetic — keeps the machinery oiled. The aim is simply that nothing in the paper is unfamiliar.

Treat CSAT like a seatbelt. You hope you never have to think about it — but you do not drive without it.

We fold CSAT practice quietly into the week from the start, precisely so it never becomes the thing that derails an otherwise strong attempt.
