Why we make you write answers from day one

Mr. Lohit Matani, IPS — Mentor · 2 February 2026 · 5 min read

There is a comfortable myth among aspirants: that you first ‘complete the syllabus’ and only then begin writing answers. It feels logical. It is also the single most common reason good students underperform in the Mains.

Knowing and writing are different skills

You can understand the Directive Principles perfectly and still write a poor answer on them. The Mains does not test what you know; it tests what you can put on paper, in order, in about seven minutes, under a clock. That is a separate skill, and like any skill it improves only with practice.

A student who starts writing in month one writes badly at first — everyone does. But by the exam they have written hundreds of answers. A student who waits until the syllabus is ‘done’ writes their first real answer with three months left, and never quite catches up.

Feedback is the whole point

Writing into a vacuum helps a little. Writing for someone who reads it, marks it, and tells you plainly where you lost marks helps enormously. The gap between a five-mark answer and an eight-mark answer is rarely knowledge; it is structure, relevance, and knowing when to stop.

Start before you feel ready. You never will feel ready — the readiness comes from the writing itself.

How we build it into the week

From the first weeks our students write to a schedule — a few questions a day, full-length tests on a fixed rhythm, every script returned with comments. By the time the syllabus is genuinely covered, writing a clean, structured answer is no longer something they think about. It is simply how they answer.
